The Colorado Gun Bill of Sale Form is a legal document that will provide proof that the sale of a firearm has taken place between two parties, whether entity to individual(s) or one individual to another. According to [C.R.S. 18-12-105(2)] there is no requirement for a new gun owner to register or seek any type of permit process unless there is intent to carry a concealed weapon. The information contained in this document, for the most part is available to prove payment and transference of ownership. This document will require notarization.

Registering a Firearm in Colorado

Title 18:  The State of Colorado will allow a person to carry a firearm inside of a vehicle if its use is for lawful protection of the person or another’s person or their property. [C.R.S. 18-12-105(2)] Colorado law will also allow a person to possess a handgun in a dwelling, a place of business, or automobile. When you carry the weapon into your home, a business, a hotel room, or any facility, it must be displayed in plain view. Local jurisdictions may or may not enact laws that restrict a person’s ability to travel with a weapon. [C.R.S. 18-12-105.6] The Act permits the nationwide carrying of concealed handguns by qualified current and/or retired law enforcement officers and does amend the Gun Control Act of 1968 (See Pub. L. 90-618, 82 Stat. 1213) to exempt any qualified current and/or retired law enforcement officers from state and local laws prohibiting the carry of concealed firearms.

To Obtain a Concealed Weapons Permit – A permit to carry a concealed weapon may be obtained through the Sheriff’s department of the county in which you reside. You will have to meet certain requirements to qualify for the permit. [C.R.S. 18-12-203]and you must consult your local Sheriff’s Department for more information with regard to obtaining a permit. Once received, the permit as well as a valid photo ID must be carried with the handgun at all times. It should be understood that a permit is not required and a handgun is not considered concealed when a person is in a private automobile or other private transportation according to [C.R.S. 18-12-105 (2)]

How To Write

Step 1 – Seller and Buyer – Begin by downloading the form and entering the following information with regard to the seller and the buyer:

  • The Seller –

  • Driver’s license number
  • Physical Address
  • City

  • AND
  • The Buyer – 
  • Full Name
  • Driver’s license number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State

Step 2 – Firearm Details – Provide the following information by entering the required information into the lines provided:

  • Make
  • Type/Model
  • Caliber
  • Serial Number (SN)

Step 3 – Trade or Purchase Details – Check the boxes that apply to your specific negotiations. If more information is required, begin on the lines provided and continue on a separate sheet if needed and attach to the form:

  • If you select a monetary payment, enter the worded dollar amount and then enter the numbered dollar amount
  • Enter the date in which the seller and buyer would like the actual sale date to be known as, in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • If payment or trade will be required at a later date, enter the final date in which payment or trade will be accepted in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Should the seller accept a trade in lieu of monetary compensation, describe the negotiated trade details in the lines provided on the form

Step 4 – Buyer’s Disclosure – The buyer must read all statements in this section and agree to them prior to providing signature. Remember that no signatures should be provided until all parties are present in front of the notary public who will authenticate the signatures.

  • Once all parties are before a notary and the Buyer agrees to the statements, enter the buyer’s signature on the signature line

Step 5 – Seller’s Disclosure – The seller must read all statements in this section and agree to them prior to signing this statement.

  • If the seller is before a notary public, they may continue with entering their signature in the signature line for the seller

Step 6 – Signatures – This document will require the signatures of the seller, buyer and two witnesses If all parties are present before a notary enter the following:

  • Enter the date of the signatures at the top of the page in dd/mm/yyyy format
  • The Seller –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • Witness 1 –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • Witness 2 – 
  • Signature
  • Printed Name

Step 7 – After the notary public has witnessed all signatures, the notary will then complete the remainder of the document and will then affix the state seal.

  • Make copies for record keeping for all of those who have signed the form
  • Give the original document to the buyer
