The Kentucky Firearm Bill of Sale is a legal document that would be used to provide evidence that there has been a legal sale, purchase or trade of a firearm. This document will also establish a change of ownership. This form will require notarization. As well the signatures of two (2) witnesses will be required and therefore, no signatures should be entered into this form until all parties are prepared to be witnessed by a notary public.

Register a Firearm in Kentucky

Kentucky gun laws state that an individual is not required by law to register firearms. Also, firearm laws in Kentucky do not require a permit to purchase any kind of firearm. However, if one would like to carry a concealed weapon, they have every right as long as they register the firearm with the state police within 15 days and are eligible to acquire a concealed carry license

Where to Register – You may register the weapon that you intend to carry concealed, at your local State Police Department anywhere in the state of Kentucky

Needed to Register (for concealed carry licensing only) :

  • When applying for a CCDW license, you must complete an application form at the sheriff’s office in his or her county of residence, in person
  • The applicant must also pay a $20.00 fee made payable to the Sheriff’s Office in your area of residence and a $40.00 check or money order made payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer. Your total fees will be $60 application fee at the time of application. Active and retired officers of the peace that meet the requirements of KRS 237.110(7) are exempt from paying the application or renewal fee – Any application that is not accompanied by a check or money order for $40.00 payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer will be returned, unprocessed, to the sheriff of the applicant’s county of residence.
  • A new photograph similar to a passport photograph, must be provided, in the event a license is issued, inasmuch as your picture must be on the firearm license – The photo must be no less than three and one-half (3 1/2) inches by four (4) inches; and must not  exceed four (4) inches by six (6) inches
  • You must provide a photocopy of a certificate provided by a certified firearm training course that has been offered or approved by the Department of Criminal Justice Training
  • Present a current driver’s license at the time of your application and presentation of all other documents
  • A notarized bill of sale

How to Write

Step 1 – Seller and Buyer Information – Enter each parties information as follows:

  • The Seller –

  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State

Step 2 – Firearm Details – All of the following details are required as follows:

  • Make
  • Type/Model
  • Caliber
  • Serial Number

Step 3 – Trade/Purchase Price – Check and apply all required information:

  • When the first box is checked, it is then indicated that the seller chooses to only accept monetary payment – Enter the worded dollar amount
  • Enter the dollar amount in numbers
  • Specify the date the parties have agreed that payment will be made in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Specify the date in which the document will be known in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • When the parties have agreed that payment will be made at a later date, then you must record that later date mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Other – If the two parties have negotiations other agreements, enter a description of the final agreement (continue by adding a sheet in more room is required)
  • Checking this box will indicate that the firearm is being provided as a gift to the buyer
  • The last box in this section will indicate the decision to implement a direct trade between the two parties. Write/type a brief description of the conditions of the trade

Step 4 – Buyer’s Disclosure – The buyer will need to very carefully review all statements in this section. If the buyer is in agreement and all signatories are present before a notary public, then the buyer may enter their signature into the “Buyer’s Signature” line.

Step 5 – Seller’s Disclosure – The Seller must read all of the statements in this section. If the seller agrees and all signatories are present before a notary public, then the buyer may continue to enter their signature into the “Seller’s Signature” line

Step 6 – Signatures – All signing parties enter:

  • Date the signatures in dd/mm/yyyy format at the top of this section

Step 7 – Notarization – As the notary witnesses all signatures, the notary public will then complete the remainder of the form, and shall affix their state seal.

  • Make copies of any completed document and provide a copy to all who signed, for their records
  • Give the original copy to the buyer
