Register a Firearm in Missouri

The state of Missouri is extremely lenient where gun laws are concerned.

  • No permit is required to purchase rifles and/or shotguns

  • Registration of rifles and/or shotguns will not be required under any Missouri gun law

  • Ownership licenses are not required in the state of Missouri

  •  There is no permits required to carry shotguns and rifles

    Regarding Handguns

  •  There are no permit that will be necessary to purchase any handgun

  • There are no registration requirements for handguns

  • There are no ownership licenses required

  • The right to carry handguns concealed, however, does require a license

The right to carry concealed guns, in the state of Missouri is taken a bit more seriously. It’s illegal to carry a concealed handgun without a concealed carry endorsement. This endorsement is labeled on the Missouri state driver’s license, once it’s procured.

In order to obtain a carry endorsement, the applicant must be at least 23 years of age. They must be a citizen of the United States, and reside in Missouri for a minimum of 6 months. Any application to legally carry a concealed  firearm will be immediately submitted to the Sheriff’s Department in the county in which the applicant resides. The application will include basic information. There will be state and federal background checks conducted.  The applicant must undergo fingerprinting and weapons training. The applicant will have to submit a certificate of weapons training completion.

Once all documentation is filed, the Sheriff will have up to three days to issue the applicant’s certificate of qualification for a concealed carry endorsement. Additionally, with regard to the endorsement, any state concealment permit will be upheld by Missouri gun laws. The right to carry guns will be considered legal as long as a concealment permit is provided to law enforcement upon request. Once an endorsement is in place, it is valid for 3 years.

It is important to remember that the right to carry guns, concealed or not, is always considered unlawful in airports, churches, hospitals, schools, restaurants or bars, state or federal buildings or any sporting event, among other establishments. Like most states who’s laws may be lenient with regard to purchase, registration or ownership, Missouri gun law is very strict when it comes to concealment of weapons and will always heavily enforce this aspect of the gun laws.
